Air Tanks - Steel vs Aluminium vs Stainless Steel
Understanding Air Tanks
Vehicle air suspension systems often require an onboard air tank for proper operation. This is especially true for those who want an option to inflate tires and similar tasks.
Choosing the Right Material
When it comes to selecting an air tank, the material is crucial. Most manufacturers today offer steel and aluminium tanks in various sizes and port configurations. Each type serves its purpose well.
However, I have reservations about steel air tanks for vehicles. While they typically have high burst pressures and are robust, they come with drawbacks. Many steel tanks lack internal coatings to prevent corrosion. Additionally, they often have ports in inconvenient locations and generally lower working pressures. I've seen numerous steel tanks rust through, creating pinholes and causing messes.
Compressors generate moisture, which collects in the bottom of the tank. Even with regular maintenance, it is challenging to prevent that rusty water from building up. This accumulation can damage other components in your system.
Our Air Tank Options
At Thor, we offer three types of air tanks: Aluminium, Seamless Aluminium, and Stainless Steel.
Aluminium Tanks
Our Aluminium Tanks come in various sizes. They feature ports that allow for side or upside-down mounting, with a bottom port for easy draining. These tanks have a working pressure of 200 psi and a burst pressure of 400 psi. They are significantly lighter than steel tanks and boast a shiny polished finish.
Stainless Steel Tanks
Our Stainless Steel Tanks are supplied to various government bodies in Australia, agricultural applications, and even diving contractors. They are an excellent alternative to plain steel tanks. With a massive burst pressure of 1000 psi and a working pressure of 200 psi, they are built to last. Like our aluminium tanks, they can be mounted at any angle thanks to their versatile port configurations.
Seamless Aluminium Tanks
Our Seamless Aluminium Tanks are crafted from spun extruded aluminium tubes. This design is weld-free, eliminating seams and joins. If your air management system is a showpiece, using one of our seamless tanks will enhance its aesthetics significantly. They feature adjustable legs for endless mounting options and have a brushed polished finish. With a burst pressure of 750 psi, they are a fantastic choice for your next build.
Sizes and Standards
Our tanks are available in 1, 3, or 5-gallon sizes and meet SAE J10 standards. Certification is available upon request for an additional cost.
Conclusion
Say goodbye to gross brown water in your air tanks! Explore our tank options today and find the perfect solution for your vehicle's air suspension needs.
