Air Tanks - Steel vs Aluminium vs Stainless Steel
Vehicle Air Suspension installs often require an onboard Air Tank for operation, as do those just wanting an option to inflate tyres & such.
But what material should I choose?
Most manufacturers these days offer Steel and Aluminium tanks in a variety of sizes & port
configurations. All of which will do the intended job just fine.
Personally, I have never been a fan of steel air tanks for vehicles. Sure, they usually boast fairly high burst pressures, and are extremely robust, especially when mounted underneath the car. But many of these tanks have no internal coatings to seal against corrosion, have ports in unusual locations, and are generally have low working pressures. I have seen numerous air tanks rust right through causing pinholes, and leaving a mess everywhere.
Compressors generate moisture, which ends up swirling around and settling in the bottom of your tank. Even with regular maintenance, its hard to stop that foul, rusty water building up, which has the potential to damage other components.
Here at Thor, we offer 3 types of Air Tanks - Aluminium, Seamless Aluminium, and Stainless Steel.
Aluminium - Our Aluminium Tanks are available in a range of sizes, with ports configured so they can be mounted on their side, or upside down, and still have a bottom port available for draining. They have a working pressure of 200psi, and burst pressure of 400psi! They are a fraction of the weight of a steel tank, and have a shiny polished finish.
Stainless Steel - Supplied to many government bodies in Australia, along with agricultural applications, and even diving contractors. They are a fantastic alternative to plain steel air tanks, and boast massive 1000psi burst pressures, and 200psi working pressure. Again, we manufacture them with port configurations allowing any angle mounting.
Seamless Aluminium - Manufactured from spinning extruded aluminium tube, this design is weld free, and has no seams or joins! If your air management system is a showpiece by itself, using one of our Seamless tanks will boost the aesthetics tenfold. Featuring adjustable legs for endless mounting options, a brushed polished finish, and 750psi burst pressure, its definitely one to consider for your next build.
Our tanks are available in 1, 3 or 5 gallon sizes, and meet SAE J10 standards.
Certification is available, if required, for additional cost.
